Question by alx1 · Dec 02, 2016 at 06:34 AM · licenseunitypro

unity pro licence question regarding revinue

say a video game makes over 200k every year for the next 10 years. you need a Pro license if you make more than 200k in revenue a year. and after 24 months of paying for the pro license you get to maintain the pro license. so does that mean you don't have to pay unity for all 10 years?

I know it's not a realistic scenario but I'm curious as to how the license works

"after 24 months of paying for the pro license you get to maintain the pro license" Where did you get that statement from?

??? No. You pay $125 per month for as long as you want to continue using the Unity Pro licence.

Sry i didn't even seen that, i was thinking in something else and typed wrong :V

That's a little expensive, actually, but i assume maintaining an engine is expensive too, so i am fine.

You don't have to keep paying. If you're assigned for a subscription there's a minimum period that you have to pay before you can opt-out. After that period you don't have to pay anymore as long as you don't use Unity anymore. Games you have created with Unity while you had an active license can still be sold as you own them, but you can't create any updates or release changes to the game without Unity.

Again, if you earn more than 100K you can't use the free personal edition anymore. If you want to continue using Unity you have to get at least a Unity plus license.

Once you earn more than 200K you can't use Unity plus anymore. So if you want to continue using Unity you have to get a Unity pro license.

Unity plus and Unity pro come with a subscription model which has a base period that you have to pay and after that period you can quit on a monthly basis.

Only Unity pro has the option "pay-to-own". The idea here is that you have to pay the usual Unity pro subscription for at least 24 month (2 years). After that period you can contact Unity that you want to use the pay-to-own option. That simply means you can continue to use the version of Unity you currently have without paying anything but you are stuck with that version. You only receive the next 3 updates and that's it. So anything that might be added later or fixed later isn't available to you unless you subscribe again.

Note: That's how i understand what is currently (2016.12.02) written in the Unity store. This information could change so don't take my word on it. If you have doubts, contact Unity directly.
