Is there a good resource for understanding what Unity does "under the hood"?
I'm just starting to experiment with Unity. I have a background in programming and am trying to get my head around "the Unity way."
Is there some resource (website, book, etc) that answers questions like the following:
What happens every frame? I.e, what are the overall steps Unity goes through from updating each object to rendering the camera view.
How does the rendering pipeline work?
How are particles rendered? Is an individual particle "cheaper" than an object with the same appearance and properties?
Etc.
I've looked at the Unity manual, but it doesn't seem to cover "under the hood" topics.
On Unity Gems we have some tutorials that go deeper into the inner workings and often provide links to the documentation (which can be hard to navigate). I think the Coroutines++ tutorial might be useful, it covers a lot of the topics like what happens in a frame etc.
How does the rendering pipeline work?
indeed, this is a huge topic that needs to be incredibly well documented. there should be books about this.

This explains what happens every frame and in what order: http://docs.unity3d.com/Documentation/Manual/ExecutionOrder.html
