Question by gosc · Oct 14, 2014 at 09:55 AM · unity 2d

Can i draw very long map?

I'm gonna to create a 2D game and I would like to draw very long (width) background and ground (using gimp), etc. The ground will not be flat, I want to use variable terrain for the physical engine. Can i draw very long (for exampe, 10 000 px width) a picture and use it in Unity, or i cant? Maybe maximum image size is 2048x2048, yes or no? So what should I do? A) draw very long image, B) draw v. long image and slice it to 10 parts, C) something else (any plugin for terrain?).

btw. Forgive me my ENG language.

Use (b) as your approach.

The max size for an image is 4096 x 4096, although in one of my projects, I used a 12,000 by 9,000 (around) and it worked. Just try it and see what happens. An easy way is to make the image maximum size, then go into the sprite editor and split it. Hope this helps, Namey5.

Slicing is always preferred. This allows you to manage each chunk separately. As applicable you can destroy when off screen and various other optimisations.
