Question by impurekind · Aug 22, 2018 at 03:52 PM · spritesmemoryspritesheetimagestexture atlas

How to add my textures, not sprites, to an atlas?

I have added a load of .png files into my project as separate textures for a single object--this is just how I'm doing it because my object is created entirely in Unity out of a load of separate quads as I have no experience with 3D modelling software to do it otherwise, so I've put a new texture on each quad to cover the complete object with details--and I just want to figure out how to add them all to one "atlas" so they're being handled as efficiently as possible (which is something I keep hearing I apparently need to do).

What I don't seem to be able to do is add anything other than sprites to an atlas when I add the textures into the project--even though this thing is called a texture atlas.

And, if this is going to be a really complicated and convoluted process to get all these separate images onto one or two "atlases" then I'd appreciate some clear as possible explanation of how to do this too, thanks.

Can you confirm if you are generating the textures at runtime or do you want to do this within the editor?

I do not know what that question means? I add the textures into Unity via the "Import New Assets" option in the Project menu and then I put them on my game objects and use them in my game. That's all I know other I'm apparently supposed to put my textures into something called a texture atlas to make sure my game is running properly, so I'm just trying to figure out how to do that, because right now it seems I seem to have some pretty huge "Stats" numbers for a very simple level that's basically just the same quad used over and over with a handful of different textures on it and a single light source:

When I say runtime I mean while the game is playing outside the editor(a mobile for example) and you can't use any of the features in it. I found this answer here that could probably help you more than I can: https://answers.unity.com/questions/276212/what-is-the-simple-way-of-applying-texture-atlas-t.html

and also recommend checking these: https://docs.unity3d.com/$$anonymous$$anual/SpriteAtlas.html https://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/U2D.SpriteAtlas.html
