Question by death · Jan 18, 2014 at 04:34 PM · learnbooks

What is the best book for learning C++?

I want to understand what stuff like Vector3 and bools are and why people do what they do in coding tutorials. I really don't want to have to rely on a video to tell me why I'm doing something.

Recommend any books?

And no, I haven't been to any type of class on this, I'm 16 :)

Unity supports 3 scripting languages:

  1. C#

  2. a JavaScript variant sometimes called UnityScript

  3. Boo

All of these are able to access the .NET libraries that are supported by $$anonymous$$ono.

A book covering a different language like c++ will offer no direct value if you wish to use Unity.

I have not read any of the books on unity development since 4.x was released so I can't make any specific recommendations.

  1. You can learn C++ if you want, but it won't help you with Unity. Unity code is written in C# (or UnityScript, or Boo) - it's a different language.

  2. The best all round reference book for C# is probably http://www.apress.com/9781430242338, and it will give you a good grounding in programming including concepts such as conditionals, loops, assignments etc. However, again, it won't teach you Unity-specific stuff about Vector3's or the Update() loop etc.

3) To learn more Unity specific stuff, Unity provides several program$$anonymous$$g tutorials here.

Oh lol. I was watching a C++ video before making this, I mixed them up.

I've been using C# with a tutorial, I'm on the animating part of my game, but I don't want to have to follow a tutorial to know what I'm doing.

The Unity tutorials $$anonymous$$ch basic Unity usage (what, how & why). How to program with the Unity API, using graphics, 2D, physics, etc. It also $$anonymous$$ches the program$$anonymous$$g basics. I wouldn't imagine anyone being able to build a working game just by blindly following the steps from one of those tutorials.
