Question by aav12 · Feb 23, 2016 at 09:56 AM · musiclegalcopyright

Can I use copyrighted music in my game?

I'm not that great in legal stuff but some people don't like to play the music in games when they're streaming. Such as GTA, the GTA radio contains copyrighted music and a lot of people don't like the music to be playing to prevent copyright strikes. But can I be able to use the Music to put in my game? Lets say I download the music from Youtube and use it in my game, is it legal? Or will I have to get special permissions? Please explain to me simply on how all this works, Geometry Dash has a lot of 'external' music. So what are my limitations when it comes to external media?

As Eric5h5 said, you are not allowed to use anything which you didn't create, haven't licenesed or don't have permissions for.

This is true whatever you are making (games, videos, music, pictures). I know many people who have had their work used without their permission, and it's not a good situation.

Basically, if you putting something in your game, and you (or one of your team) didn't specifically make it then you don't have permission to use it (unless than if it comes with an appropriate usage license).

Aside from music, a few other things you generally wont have permission to use are:

  • Sound Effects

  • Images

  • Models

  • Fonts

  • Some scripts / libraries

  • Videos

  • Brands

If in doubt, check with the owner / creator of the media and always check the license terms if available, but you would normally expect to have to pay and sign contracts for the use of that media.

You can't use anything you don't have explicit permission to use. Note that this isn't a Unity-related question.
