Question by aWolfKing · Jun 21, 2016 at 01:49 PM · navmeshotheruse

How to: NavMesh with other use?

I want a NavMesh like system which I can use for other things like temprature regions for an open world game or regions with a level system (Ui which shows recommended level for the region the player is in). This are examples and is not what I want to achieve at the moment, but I want a NavMesh-like system which can serve this uses. I understand creating a NavMesh-like thing like this is very hard but it is somthing I could really use; Question: How whould i create a NavMesh-like system with other uses or modify the NavMesh system to give it other uses? Any links, explanaition and/or scripts are welcome. I understand this is not somthing very easy and therefore do not expect many replies, but I am happy with every single sentance that could help me achieve this (in the future).

Can't you make use of the "cost" variable on nav meshes?

U mean checking on what navmesh layer the player is and read its cost as a variable? I could do this but i will have some troubles if I need to use the navmesh for multiple uses like both temprature and level. Good solution tough, thanks.

Why not utilize triggers?

Learn how to generate meshes by code. Create a custom class that holds values like temperature for any given vertex of the mesh. You could probably use a float or int array and the element indicces mirror the ones from the mesh's vertex array. Use vertex colors to represent the temeprature visually.
