Top-Down 2D Weather Question
I have a rudimentary weather system in place, but the jury is out as to whether I want to go with animated sprites or give the particle system a shot. However, either scenario has raised the same question for me, which is how something such as rain is "placed" in the game. For example, right now, my rain is attached to the camera, which makes it follow the player with no problems, but you can also see that it is following the player, and therefore doesn't look right.
So far, I've only come up with one solution, but I'm not sure if it is the best way to go. And that is to use either a huge animated sprite or particle system, but make it so large that the player will not have time to walk out from under it before it ends on its own. I can do this, but I have a feeling there is a better way. Any thoughts?
If you go with the sprite way, you'll want to tile the sprite so that they stay put. Say if the player is moving right, as when the sprite leaves the camera to the left it reappears to the right of the camera. If you go with the particle system, the particles can be made to be in world space and have the system follow the player. That way the weather will stay where it is but new particles will keep appearing around the player.
I'll explore the sprite option :).
As far as the particle system, so far I have the system attached to the camera (which follows the player). It works well enough, but when the player moves, you can definitely see that is following the player. I'm looking to avoid that.
