Question by williamcwlee · Aug 10, 2016 at 07:33 PM · crashlightplaymoderealtimebaked

Freeze on Playmode (possibly light problem)

Using Mac Pro, Unity 5.3.4f1 personal

Problem: When I create a new project and just hit play, it works (with default main camera and directional light); but if I add ANY 3D object, say a cube, then hit play, Unity would freeze and I have to force quit the program.

After I did some research, I figure it might be some problem with the light

Things I tested:

  • Change "Directional Light -> Light -> Baking" to Baked, play will NOT freeze => only freeze on Realtime and Mixed setting

  • Unity ONLY freeze on play when I added new 3D objects, does NOT freeze with new particle system or even additional lights

  • Old projects with setting on realtime can still play without problem at anytime, any setting, no matter how I change them; but if I load any newly created project and try to play Unity would freeze

  • New projects, even scenes from imported assets/packages WILL freeze on play with the above condition

  • "Preference -> GI Cache -> Clean Cache" does NOT work, still freezes on play

  • Under the "Realtime or mixed" setting, If I click on the "Main Camera", Unity WILL freeze (I believe thats because it is trying to render the camera preview window) => again, if I change to "Baked" everything is fine

Things I am going to try next:

  • Update to latest version of Unity (5.4.0f3)

Anything you guys can help with this problem is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

So I installed the latest version of Unity and problem still persist.

I also tried running all the projects on another computer (an old mac $$anonymous$$i with the same version of Unity and $$anonymous$$avericks OS) and it works fine without freeze.

Next I will try updating the mac pro to the latest OS ($$anonymous$$avericks -> El Capitan)

NOTE: the problem of freeze on play started only a few days ago, before that Unity was always fine, and I had no updates and made no changes to my computer hardware/software before the problem began

So I fixed the problem by updating the OS to El Capitan. Going to give it another day or two to make sure everything is fine but should be fine from now on.
