Upgrading to 5.3 broke our particle systems on Android.
We have a couple of additive particle systems using the default particle system material. After updating to Unity 5.3, these particle systems are broken on Android, rendering as black squares. Things look fine on our Mac & Windows builds, and in the editor. Any idea what we might be doing wrong, or what we can change to fix things?
There's a particle-related bug in 5.3.1, which causes the console to spam error messages. This could be related.
It's supposed to be fixed in the latest patch release, so you could try getting that. Otherwise, give 5.3.0 a go, and test that.
How far are you upgrading? From 5.2 or 4.x? There's a big difference.
Did you find out what was causing this? I have the same problem in Unity 5.6. Looks good in the editor, black box on Android.

Go to the Renderer Tab in your Particle System, change the Shader to a Mobile Shader (Mobile > Particle > Additive) Repeat for each child. I was having the same issue on Unity 5.6, this fixed it.
