Question by matt_unity236 · Nov 24, 2017 at 11:05 AM · imagesdialogue

Brand new, no idea where to start

Hey all. So im new to unity and have bought the dialogue system addon to make life a little easier but I cant seem to get the hang of it. The tutorial videos seem to be very specific to certain types of games and im struggling to extrapolate the information I need so I would like to explain my basic idea and see if anyone can point me in the right direction.

The player is presented with a simple ui with a selection of locations which remains on display unless they enter a conversation. The Background image which will fill the screen changes depending on what location the player is in, and which npcs are present i.e if the player is at the mall and his friend is there, display image with friend, if friend is not present, display image of mall without friend. I would also like to impose other conditions such as did player give friend his coat, then display another image with friend in mall wearing coat.

So my first problem is that I dont really want to define a thousand game objects and toggle their visibility as I imagine that would get a bit crazy after a while, so there must be a way of having a canvas on screen and simply telling the canvas what background source file to use depending on conditions.

 Pseudo code like:

 If player is at mall
 {
          if player friend is present
                {
                         If player friend has jacket
                                   {
                                            display image of mall with friend wearing jacket
                                   }
                                   Otherwise display image of mall with friend not wearing jacket
                }

 }

I have many other questions but this one will at least get me started.

Thanks in advance for the help.

What you really want? What addon, what tutorial videos? Please don't expect us to write your mechanics for you. Please look into https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/ and maybe some will give you an idea how to proceed. Otherwise state your question and what you have problem with without just going on and on about your idea how it should work. Your question is not stated or not clear at all.

How incredibly helpful. I didnt ask anyone to write mechanics for me,. I clearly stated that i just wanted someone to point me in the right direction, i.e. to a tutorial or video that might cover the information that i need without having to sit through days of tutorials on irrelevant stuff. And whilst im on the subject, even if i HAD been asking for someone to help me write the mechanics. . why would that be a problem? pretty sure this is the help room, not the "troll anyone who is new" forum.

Sorry if i seem agressive but you should state what you need clearly. Direction is tutorials that i showed you. We have no idea what addon you use or what videos you used. How are we supposed to help you with a little information you gave.

I can answer overall what i would do but answer would be as vague as you presented your idea. Use UI elements and place background images there as well as text. For moving and sliding in/changing text/images use Unity's Legacy Animation. You can get all of information to implement that from Unity tutorials which i advice you to check out.
You can change all what happens with UI with your code written in C# or JS. Please go through tutorials and everything what you described will be easy.
