Design/discussion question
Which would be the best approach in developing my boardgame?
Hello Unimmunity,
I am a Computer Science student and i would like to develop a math game as my dissertation. I already have a basic desing of the game. My idea is to make a boardgame like risk but without armies. In order to conquer territories you would have to answer correctly a math question.
I am a complete Unity noob, i even dont know if this is the correct place or way to ask. I have been reading some tutorials and trying to get started with making the board. I looked into hex grids, but i don't know if that would be a good approach. Could someone give me any advice on the matter?
Thanks in advance.
If you want to make a computer game that captures the look and feel of a board game then you have to make a good board game first. The decision between a tile/hex based map versus traditional board versus cards is kind of fundamental to the mechanics of your board game. Go play a few modern board games before you try to build one.
Board games are a very specific subset of video games, where you have no GPU, no CPU, an almost static display and no preloading. You rely entirely on user input to do most of your processing. There are some good things too, you do have nice automated random number generators and generic randomisers available. Physics calculations are processed automatically.
Designing and building a fun game with such a limited processor set is challenging. If you start building a board game straight into the computer you are unlikely to get things right. Did I mention that you should create a good board game first?

Design/discussion questions should be posted to Unity Forums. Unity Answers addresses single, specific technical questions. But if you post there, consider spending some time to flush out your criteria and perhaps create a image before posting. Without concerte information about your design, it is really hard to give an accurate answer to questions like, "I looked into hex grids, but i don't know if that would be a good approach." As you break your project down to single, specific issues, Unity Answers will be a good place to post.
