Unity 5 How to make your own textures for particles?

I'm trying out some particle effects but the ones that you have by default look blurry whereas I want something bright, some glowing orbs. I read you can just create a new material, add your texture and you have your own particles. Well I tried that but it's not really working.

Does anyone know how to make your own textures for particles in Unity 5? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
