Question by RogerGu · Jan 01, 2016 at 10:24 PM · directionvector3 operations

Have angle, need direction

I am making simple AI for a vehicle to turn toward another vehicle to give chase. I used the example under http://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/Vector3.Angle.html to get the angle. What I don't understand is how I can get the direction of that angle. If the chase vehicle is facing forward the angle gives me how far to turn, but does not give the direction of the turn (left or right).

This might be a silly question, but why do you want to use the angle in the first place? Sinse in 3d space, a single angle is usually not telling you a whole lot as you experienced :p In other words, what do you want to use the angle for?

Normally, "target position - my position" result into the direction that you want to go (This is a Vector3 ins$$anonymous$$d of an angle) Changing your forward towards that direction (either instantly or using Vector3.$$anonymous$$oveTowards to give it a more natural rotation speed) makes your vehicle turn in that direction. You could also use the normalized version of that direction for readability but that's optional I believe (EDIT, when using the $$anonymous$$oveTowards, use a normalized Vector3 as target direction ;)...

Thanks @troien, but it is a wheeled vehicle so I don't want to simply turn it, I want to turn the wheel colliders ins$$anonymous$$d for a more realistic feel.

I just found a post that gives me what I need: http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/13033/how-to-deter$$anonymous$$e-if-enemy-is-on-my-left-or-right-h.html

thanks.
