NavAgents use way too many resources?

Hello it seems that I might as well make my own AI navigation script, because NavAgents are eating up way too many resources. and as a side note, an obstacle component must be added to every solid object in your game if you have any NavAgents. I am using the NavAgent component for my goblin mob, and it seems that if about only thirty or so goblins are on screen at once, my game will start to lag. Are NavAgents useful in any way other than having something like a single Slenderman mob following the player around? Or should I just get started on making my own path finding script?
