Question by bpears · Aug 24, 2012 at 11:12 PM · modelfbxlagterrian

Best way to add corn stalks?

I have a model corn stalk, I imported it to unity as object and began duplicating to make a corn field. It started REALLY creating some bad lag. I think there are too many polys. Is there a way to do this better?

I don't need them super detailed, just to be there and be able to walk around in them. If I made them a terrain asset would that make a difference? Like use it as a tree? If so, how would I make it into a terriain asset?

Use the terrain system; making zillions of separate objects will never work well. Regarding creating vegetation, the Unity docs explain all that.

Hey bpears,

I would suggest making some 2D textures and billboarding them rather than optimizing your 3D meshes. It will be quicker and, dare I say, easier.

-Hope I've helped, Gibson

So would that be like a wall with a picture of corn across it? I'd like them to be life-like and able to walk through them.

Not sure if that's what you're saying... I'm new to unity.

Edit: Also, I used an optimization filter in 3ds max and that allowed a LOT more to be placed, but still not enough...

You do both. $$anonymous$$ake a nice model for things close, and a billboard for things far away. Use the terrain and vegetation system as Eric said.

The terrain system handles billboarding for you.
