Height map effect seems to go sideways instead of outwards
I've added textures to a model - UV's seem okay.
I've added a heightmap, and while dragging the slider the 'height' effect goes sideways in stead of outwards/inwards.
Anyone have any idea what i'm doing wrong? I cant find anything on it thus far.
Thanks! R!
Either the models normals do not point outwards, or, more likely, the height map is wrong. A heightmap contains pixels representing the three directions of a vector. The blue channel is the z axis, what you're actually looking for. A proper heightmap is mostly blue.

That's exactly what the parallax effect does: it simulates small elevations or depressions by shifting pixels (texels, actually) farther or closer to the camera.
The parallax shader reads texels from the texture slightly behind or ahead the ideal point, just as it was seeing the points in an irregular surface. This effect works better when the height changes are relatively smooth - abrupt changes may unveil the magic. The manual shows an interesting example of parallax effect.
