Decals on uneven surfaces using orthographic camera for mobile

Hey. I've been trying to tackle an issue how do I make a decal/sprite follow the curves of the mesh it's based on. I found a deferred decals example somewhere on the internet and it worked fine in a test project, but since my current project uses orthographic camera, the deferred rendering solution doesn't work there. The game is also targeted for mobile devices, so the solution should be pretty light on performance.

I'm pretty stumped, so if anyone has any pointers or study material I could use, I'd greatly appreciate it!

What do you mean by "mesh its based on"? Are you trying to just project an image onto a surface?
