Lightmapping.Bake() does nothing

When I call Lightmapping.Bake() from a script, it does absolutely nothing.

Context: everything is set up correctly as far as I know.

Auto-generated lightmaps work fine. I enable them from script by calling Lightmapping.giWorkflowMode = Lightmapping.GIWorkflowMode.Iterative
I turn off auto-generated lightmaps using Lightmapping.giWorkflowMode = Lightmapping.GIWorkflowMode.OnDemand
Then, I call Lightmapping.Bake() ... and nothing. No error messages, just nothing.
Also, when I call Lightmapping.giWorkflowMode = Lightmapping.GIWorkflowMode.OnDemand, it turns off "Contribute Global Illumination" for no apparent reason.

Any idea what's happening here?

BTW: I'm using 2019.4.1f1 on a Mac.
