Question by SteveSwink · Apr 12, 2012 at 12:26 AM · terraintreesbillboard

Terrain; Billboards cutting off artwork for custom trees

We've created some custom trees by editing the textures and layout of some existing trees, which were created with Tree Creator.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a problem with our custom trees: the billboards they generate are obviously cut off. So when the transition to billboarded version happens, or if you see the trees at a distance, they look bad. Like so:

The question is, can we edit the way in which the billboard versions of the trees are generated? How does this work? I know from the docs it happens at run time. Can we tweak it at all? Why is it generating incorrectly? alt text

So, I've played with changing the height and width of the tree by making the branches longer or shorter. I've also played with making the trees much smaller total. In all cases, the billboard is cut off. If you make the trees short and fat, it's cut off on the sides ins$$anonymous$$d of the top.

I guess no one else has any idea and/or no one has seen this problem? :(

I know this is an old question but I am stuck on my project because of this darn issue. I posted a similar question and no one is helping.

I would not use the buggy Unity terrain system if my life depended on it but I'm making a package for the unity asset store.

As you can see in the screenshot below I'm also having this billboard cropping / clipping problem, is there a fix?

The tree colour is also beco$$anonymous$$g a less saturated green to a much brighter and vibrant green when they're swapped out. Is there a way to control the billboards ambient colour?

Cheers.

in the tree generator on the main branch(When you start fresh it is the first branch also it is at the bottom of the tree chart.) there is a height option. Make it higher and see if that will keep the billboards from cutting off. If that doesn't work decrease the size of the billboard leaves. Its never really happened to me so these are just reasons i can think of.

Thanks DG,

After some experimentation I've seen that setting the leaf size to big without having supporting branches results in the cropping of the texture. The billboarding system must use the profile of the tree mesh to calculate the bounding area for the billbaord, any texture billboards to far from branch mesh will be cropped out.

Cheers
