Question by thorskull · Jun 17, 2013 at 05:31 PM · meshmodelnoobscene viewgame view

How to make mesh look normal in game mode

This is probably a really noobie question but oh well...

So I have a GameObject that is a model of a person. In scene view it has distinct eyes, muscles, toes, fingers and other body parts. But when I go to game view it turns into a brown blob in the shape of a person but with no distinguishable features. How can I change this? Thanks for any help!

Do you have a light in the scene ?

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Also, your question title is misleading - please edit it to more closely match your question.

Alright, title changed and a picture for your viewing pleasure: As you can see in scene view the model is nice and detailed while in game mode it's not. Hope this clears any confusion.

Certainly interesting. What happens if you turn on lighting in the scene view (the little light icon next to RGB in the top bar)?

As Fattie mentioned, do you have a light source in the scene? If there isn't one (only ambient light), then the normals on your mesh would have no effect and you wouldn't see any shadows.

When I turned on the lighting the model became just like the one in game view, the "blob". Since this has to do the lighting then, what is a good way to fix it? The lighting in Unity has always been slightly confusing to me, so apologies for sounding more than slightly unintelligent.

You'll need to add GameObjects with a 'light' component, and then adjust the lighting. Directional lights will act over the entire scene; the other lights have a range and are 'local', so make sure they're close enough to light up the model.

Thanks! Added a point light and it works great.

Clearly, you have no light in your scene. What you need to do is click GameObject > Create Other > Point Light.

Position the point light so it lights your scene nicely and you will find to your delight that the brown blob is gone and your character is lit and visible, distinguishable features and all.

Thanks! I just figured it out before you posted. I am working with what someone else had made so I wasn't for sure whether there was light already or not.

FYI, you can search by component type in the Hierarchy by typing:

 t:light

in the search.
