I cannot get the blank, gray editable terrain to show up

I go to Game Object > Create Other > Terrain and see a screen but no blank, gray Terrain template shows up. Every single tutorial I've seen says that one will show up, and can be edited, but it never shows up. Is there some setting I need to change or what? Thanks
