How to handle large detailed environments? (LOD, Models, Unity Terrain)
Ive seen similar questions asked before but i am in search of a more specific answer in relation to what i want to achieve.
I plan on creating a 3D single player action/adventure game and want there to be a large environment for the player to explore. The main world however will mostly be barren with not many landmarks and will consist of hills, grass plains and pathways between cliffs. I'm wondering what would be the best way to handle this. I feel as though the unity terrain system is a little outdated for what i need and does not support large environments well. So then i came to the conclusion that i would use models. The question is how would i handle LOD. Should all smaller objects like trees be included in one model or should i split the model into the basic terrain and then keep smaller objects like rocks and trees separate? Also should the entire map be one model or should it be split into multiple areas that would load in between areas. I'm unsure and would like to know the solution that would be the most efficient before starting the project.
