Mac Graphics Hardware for Unity Authoring

I've looked and looked and it seems everyone's skirting around this issue without actually addressing it.

This is for Unity authoring -- for using the software. I'm not talking about the device to which the product will be deployed.

The page outlining Unity system requirements says nothing about required graphics hardware specifications for Macintosh computers. What is good enough? What isn't? When I click on the Apple icon, and then click "About this Mac", what specifically should I see? Is it even known?

I presume its pretty much the same as for Windows, as these days both platforms pretty much use the same hardware. Am I wrong?

It says your video hardware needs to support DirectX 9 / Shader $$anonymous$$odel 2. Clearly DirectX information doesn't apply here, so I was looking for a way to get a $$anonymous$$ac to tell me about the shader model. I think I found the solution, though. You need to find your graphics hardware model under the Graphics/Display page of the information window that appears when you click "$$anonymous$$ore Info..." in the "About this $$anonymous$$ac" dialog box, then you need to check the specifications on that hardware to see what shader models it supports. (On Windows you just run dxdiag and everything's right there.)

tanoshimi -- I'm running a class and I need to be able to tell people before they sign up if their computer has sufficient capabilities.

So here's the answer to my question. (I was able to find the answer when it dawned on me that the Shader $$anonymous$$odel support level can be found as well as that of DirectX.) The system requirements given for Unity don't appear to be specific enough for $$anonymous$$acs, but they actually are because of the hardware requirements of Snow Leopard. All Intel-based $$anonymous$$acs are built with sufficient graphics hardware for Unity authoring. That's the Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, Air series, and Pro series.

Oh I didn't specify... I was interested in laptops specifically. I can't speak to other form factors.

I look up MacBook and get this

Integrated Nvidia GeForce 9400M with 256 MB shared with main memory (up to 512 MB available in Windows through Boot Camp)

As they are the same cards as used in IBM devices the specs are the same. If the graphics card would work on Windows for Unity it would work on a Mac.

No doubt, wiki will have a big list of Shader models for all cards

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nvidia_graphics_processing_units

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units

Get them to look their GPU up on those pages.

I think, generally, all Dx9.0c cards support shader model 3
