Question by Nerdmigo · Jun 30, 2014 at 12:51 PM · scaleoculus riftmeters

How can i make my corridor x meters long ?

Hi guys,

i will clarify the question: I need to create a 3D environment with Unity for use with OcolusRift and a Redirected Walking setup. So you within this Redirected Walking space you are wearing a OR and some form of position tracking.

If you are in a room for testing purposes which is lets say 5x5 meters, i have to be able to reconsrtuct the size within unity.

So how can i create a corridor or room thats really 10 meters long ?

When i create a cube and a plane in unity the both have the 1,1,1 default scale but they arent equal in size.. which is problematic.

Is it clear what i mean ? Any kind of hint would be greatly welcome ! Thanks guys.

Cheers Chris.

I hope this helps. a unity cube is 1m by default. a unity plane is 10m by default. why? I don't know. in 3dsmax, exporting an object that's 1 generic unit long to fbx comes through (set import scale set to 1, not the default .1) in Unity is 1m also, I think. I don't know about other 3D apps.

Use the cube as your ruler, and you should be fine.

Thank you this actually really helps because now the difference between cube/plane makes sense. I will use the cube as ruler yes. Ok so now i have a faaar to big envirnment :D (all hail prefabs right ? :?) Thanks again, any more comments or discussion is welcome because i am not really new to unity but new to making "stuff to scale" if that makes sense. cheers !

Instead of using a plane you can use a really "thin" cube as a "ground plane". I find a "thin" cube to be much easier to work with as a "ground" than using a plane.

the plane has only one rendered face, so you have to rotate the plane ;-)

I use self built planes, but I suspect the new "quad" (a more sensible plane with a lower poly-count) may be 1 m too.
