Are assets somehow checked before being published
So I was lately wondering, are we somehow protected from illegal assets? If I would buy lets say an RPG music pack from asset store for 30$ and creator of it somehow broke someone elses license by ripping of or copying music, and i'd publish my game on google play with it and got caught by the true author. Would I be solely responsible for it and maybe face legal charges?

The charges are charged to the company who owns the game. If you are that company then it will be you. However, I believe unity has rules to protect it. In most cases, if the author stole it, that party would be responsible. You would just need to remove the sounds out of your game.
