If I save game state to a Node => Express => MongoDB server; do I even need PlayerPrefs?

I am creating a multiplayer racing game, and I am not a fan of giving players access to files containing state. Can I skip PlayerPrefs completely and save state to a back end server? I am already doing user registration and authentication this way. I am thinking not just about score and player rankings. I am considering saving NPC location and state as well as what ever else needs to be saved.
