Trying to create a 2D special weapon system like Ninja Gaiden / Castlevania

I'm entirely new to coding and programming. I've been using the Rex Engine to code the demo for my IP and I've actually made a lot of headway. I'm just having trouble figuring out how to map a special attack to a specific button, but enable for different attacks to be used depending on the specific weapon powerup that was collected. For example, in Castlevania when you pick up the Holy Water it will replace the Axe special weapon if you have it. Any suggestions are definitely welcome. Thank you.
