I need help with attaching/detaching weapons to a character

Greeting friends, Apologies if my question is long or poorly worded. I am a newbie who is trying to create his own character in Blender, texture it and rig it, give it animations and then export it to Unity so I can make a game with it. Most things I have been able to handle by searching for tutorials and such but the thing that has me stumped is changing weapons. Exporting different weapons from blender , storing it as a prefab and then replacing an existing weapon at runtime has been a bit of a nightmare. Recently I discovered a very simple and effective solution that fixed this problem but I am worried that it might create others. What I did was attach all weapons at the same time to the character and then export the whole thing, afterwards all I do is enable/disable the weapons I wish to use or not use.

1 - Is this an OK method for using multiple weapons?

2 - Does it present a problem if I attach scripts for the different types of attacking on the weapons themselves?
