Question by Muzz5 · Aug 11, 2011 at 09:07 PM · mocap

Is webcam mocap possible?

I know this isn't a scripting problem, but, I want to know if the following is possible. To use a webcam for mocap. However, I have no idea how to go about this - I don't know where to start. So what series of steps should I take? Also, will it require Pro (movie textures?)

What if he meant using multiple webcams, somehow connected to the software and arranged like real mocap cameras?

For mocap? No, not really. The current level of technology for one-view motion reconstruction isn't feasible for production use. Rotoscoping, however, can be done very well with a webcam, and is a great way to animate on the cheap.

None of this would have anything to do with Unity, though... it would all be in your animation program.

I can't really disagree with Ben 12 but try out this software and let us know the quality. The captures look great from the kinect sensor but not sure about a webcam.

You cannot do mocap with a webcam i think but you can make webcam or gesture control games using extreme reality http://www.xtr3d.com/ . this software converts your unity game to a motion controlled game with a normal webcam like you do in ps3 move.
