Is there anyway to show file extensions in the project window?

No, there isn't. You could give them a name including the extension such as: name.obj.obj or name_obj.obj. Or just give them different names or put them in different folders.

You can't. I recommend you either tag your assets, use an useful name convention or structure them in folders. Whichever is more useful for you and your workflow. Note that you can automatically do that automatically via scripting (see AssetPostprocessor)

It shows the name and the extension for the currently selected file at the bottom of the project window.

Only with 2-column layout, I believe.
