Glow Effect

Hey guys,

I'm trying to achieve a simple glow effect that I need to apply to some objects in my scene.

I already tried to add the "Bloom" script to my camera but the fps impact is huge, from 60 to 40-45fps; keep in mind that I'm working on a mobile game, otherwise it would be totally fine.

I've looked around but I couldn't find a real and cheap solution.

Thanks for your help!

I usually use a free asset called $$anonymous$$$$anonymous$$Glow. Not all of its functions work on mobile, though.

Yes, I tried it, don't know if I was doing something wrong but the performance were actually worse, around 30-35fps with $$anonymous$$obile shader from the asset.

Depends on what's glowing. If it's static, best practice is to add a blurred PNG flat circle right in the middle of the object with attached "face camera" script. And if you want the glow to affect surroundings, attach point light. Can't find any cheaper.

Hmm interesting suggestion, but I'm not very pleased with the result.

I tried playing around with area light and some png gradient but couldn't really obtain something "good".

I'm trying to achieve a kind of "neon lamp" feeling, that kind of glow, I can't use Halo either, since my object are rectangular shaped.

You can also try overlaying the same object, colored with your glow color, transparent, and set shader to render it behind basic one. And, before even spending time on that glow, make sure that glow is crucial. I suggest you to bypass it for performance sake

Have you tried giving the object an emissive material?
When giving the object an emissive material and setting it to static it will make a nice glow effect.

This goes over it in great detail: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa6kW5HhRd4

Thanks everyone for the answers, in the end I implemented some of your suggestions, some objects have an halo component attached, other simply have an emissive material and in some cases I'm using a simple png gradient around the object.

The result is not bad at all, very similar to the bloom script but with 20 more fps!
