[META] UA! We still have problems
Hello again,
I'm sorry for posting all these [meta] questions, but there really is no other way of communicating with all the important people in this community.
While looking over the past month or so, not much has changed. There is an improvement in quality of questions, although I don't think it's by very much (there are still stupid questions getting approved from the queue). It seems like some people are learning and it's all quite peaceful.
But more recently I have gotten annoyed by something:
I have about 5 questions that I have answered (In one way or another), that should be either closed or my answer accepted. I have written multiple comments asking the OP to do exactly that, but nothing has happened. Occasionally someone with high enough Karma comes past to do something about it, but that doesn't happen very often.
What I'm trying to get at, is that this community is growing very rapidly, but the amount of people able to manage it are not. Thos of us who at least try to do the right thing, but don't have much time (like me), can't gain the Karma to be able to do the right thing.
Some suggestions I've come up with include:
-Just plain lowering the minimum Karma level for doing more adminy stuff
-Increasing the Karma gain for certain people (now quite sure how to do this)
-Having an easy access system for high karma people to give karma to others (extra rewards)
-Adding a separate queue for things the high karma people should check, to which lower karma people can add to. (To Do List)
-Mark Questions with a special markers saying: look at this or do something about this... etc
I know It's a big ask, but could something be done about this problem?
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Does anyone have any other opinions, Is it just me??
Another problem I think we have, is that there is no way of contacting all the people that matter, especially with [meta] stuff.
It would be really nice if there was a mailing list or something, so stuff like this could be done someplace else?
I just feel really guilty for asking a question that shouldn't be on UA (Even though I use the meta tag)
Thanks again,
Benproductions1
Preaching to the choir dude, but upvote from me. This just seems to be UA runs : experienced people get p*d off, leave, new people come and answer questions, eventually get p*d off, leave, rinse, repeat.
my question a few months ago : http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/432710/meta-unity-answers-is-degrading-.html
almost the exact same question I found from 3 years ago : http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/18806/what-can-we-do-to-improve-the-quality-of-unityansw.html
And another from the forums that had responses that made me sad : http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/179847-$$anonymous$$gestions-Changes-to-the-Unity-Answers-Section
While a gabazillion people are happy to upvote lolcatz on FB, no-one here upvotes their fellow members for good answers. And before I stopped being active here, I would say including myself there were only about 4 people who would accept answers on behalf of lazy OPs. If I see anything older than 3 months, I accept. It totally depends on if I have interest to open the question, or find an unaccepted answer while doing my own searching.
Just plain lowering the $$anonymous$$imum $$anonymous$$arma level for doing more ad$$anonymous$$y stuff
This was asked by Julien and apparently some changes were made. There has been fluctuating problems with the new karma levels working then not working. Response from Unity has been also fluctuating between frequent and infrequent : http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/447464/meta-for-ua-devs-can-karma-privileges-be-changed.html
Increasing the $$anonymous$$arma gain for certain people (now quite sure how to do this)
Simply upvote your fellow members. I have also done this for several people, look at their profile, accept 3 pages of answers that have not been accepted. Instant 1500 karma. If I didn't accept half my own answers, and someone accepted the rest of $$anonymous$$e, my karma would be double.
Having an easy access system for high karma people to give karma to others (extra rewards)
This can be done only by the very highest mods. I assume only Unity $$anonymous$$ods as I've only seen Graham give karma.
Adding a separate queue for things the high karma people should check, to which lower karma people can add to. (To Do List)
This would be part of the changes that have been asked for to be added to the moderation que, something like "seek approval from higher mod". But while generic responses on rejecting havn't been implemented, or elaborated on the action taken/to be taken, I wouldn't hold your breath. You might get more luck asing merry_christmas : http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/460121/beta-unity-answers-add-on.html
$$anonymous$$ark Questions with a special markers saying: look at this or do something about this... etc
This is the tag system. In the past I have seen tags like write-my-code, adding these type of tags give a clear indicator to what is happening in the question.
I know It's a big ask, but could something be done about this problem?
Good luck, but again don't hold your breath.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
yes, lots ....
Does anyone have any other opinions, Is it just me??
You are not alone dude, chin up. All I can suggest is look at and follow the questions you are interested in, and just have fun answering them. That is the only way you will remain here without getting p****d off with the constant stream of duplicate/write-my-code/how-do-I questions. I hope you have more patience, strength and deter$$anonymous$$ation than I had. Just make sure you don't end up being despised and flamed as I have had happen to me ....
@alucardj Thanks, as always you are one of the first to respond to this kind of stuff (or even raise the issue)
It feels like there is just not going to be a change in this community. (as you said) $$anonymous$$aybe there should be a completely separate branch of "UA" or even a completely different website for "advanced users".
$$anonymous$$aybe if all the super active people in the community left and UA was filled with stupid lmgtfy questions and/or asking for code questions, Unity will do something about it.
I'm not asking for a boycott, I'm just saying it's an option :)
Still 10k as far as i know. Lowering that value wouldn't be that great i guess since the misuse will grow. It's the same with the moderation queue.
I would suggest to allow $$anonymous$$ < 15 people to upvote $$anonymous$$ > 15 peoples posts but not $$anonymous$$ < 15 ppl. A lot of the one-question-ppl would upvote an answer, but they can't, so they never will since they are gone for good after their single-question post.
The karma limit for voting was ment to prevent spammers to gain karma so they stay below the 15 karma limit. At the moment it prevents voting for lets say 75% of the active users.
well for me personally if I don't make the correct answer I usually delete it after some time except if it was upvoted.
but that too drives me as far as if I really don't know the all aspects of the answer I'll not answer. ESPACELLY on low karma people as they almost never accept answer.
and if low karma people have bunch of questions I make a comment for them to start accepting the accepted ones or he's not getting the answer fast enough.
well that just mainly drives me not to even think much about helping.
but mostly asking. I always accept answer and upvote if the answerer really did a hard job on giving me the answer.
I downvote permanantly only on my questions if the aswerer didn't even make a sligtest reading to understand my problem. and I'm not doing it to the others anylonger since they cannot go in to the - karma.
-karma was really good back than when you could see the noob 1 karma and really give me what I want and begone user with -karma.
now they are both same.
just my opinion.

hey guys I think an important point is THE SITE HAS DRAMATICALLY IMPROVED the last few weeks... [scratch that]
Actually I have had to retract this award-winning answer, since,
the site has gone to hell the last couple months.
(One possible reason is - bizarrely - nothing more than the "choke point" that - bizarrely - the "send message" button on the moderation page next to the "delete" button, is broken.)
you know what come to think of it .. I'm just going to close dupes and NOT send a message to the person. it might be a bit rude. But so what? they don't know who I am .. hahah! :)
As @alucardj said, It's really a cycle of getting pissed off, quitting, new people co$$anonymous$$g, getting pissed off, quitting etc.
I agree that there is no panic about karma levels, but things like this have been asked many times before and nothing has changed. $$anonymous$$aybe it is a good idea to just quit and save yourself the getting pissed off part
Also I disagree that it's dramatically improved. It's improved, but it's sipping again. So many times do I just look at the mod queue and go: These should all be rejected... 2 seconds later all of them are posted and I can't do anything about it!!
do you mean you can't reject them? that sucks
how many points do you need to reject ?
Oh, I can reject if they are in the queue, but I can't delete ones they are out. I find it ridiculous that I can edit any question I like, but closing it or accepting an answer is just too much power.
I was referring to the situation where you peek at the queue and go, I'll delete these later if someone else doesn't do it for me... then some idiot posts it.... and then I'm just like @$#ˆ%@#&%&!!!!! WHY???
Sorry, thats the only way I can think of expressing what It feels like in words :)

I hear you. I cannot say I'm great at moderating but with time it's improving, and I think that's the case for many new-coming moderators.
I many times miss some collaborative functions which would serve as communication channel amongst the dedicated people. In the moderation queue, and perhaps even in Questions, a communication channel which is not visible for people < karma. This could be a separate column / box, which would act exactly as comments. There we would for instance be able to ask another moderator, "Is this Ok regarding this and that?". Later on perhaps even with a @ping
towards all moderators.
I think it would be a good collaborative initiative where we could learn from each other and create a more streamlined moderation.

Just in case you missed it :)
Thats an awesome idea, a seperate comments section for mods, where we can all agree on what to do. That would be even more helpfull on popular questions where there is a lot more pressure on a single mod than with the usual, DUPLICATE QUESTION thing ;)
It would also be nice to get some confirmation on how others handle certain situations and make sure we aren't getting too pissed off that the ton of crap questions XD
+1

I've gained around 750 Karma in just over 2 days. Very soon I'll be breaking the 1k mark (976 at time of writing).
I have gained that Karma very quickly by answering questions that to most of you on this page are very trivial. It has been a LARGE part of my own U3D learning experience.
Technically, if I keep at it I can break 3k in maybe, 2 weeks. What I will say is that having 3k Karma would not enable me to Approve a lot of Answers that come through simply because I don't have the knowledge I need to verify many answers and it would be wrong of me to go round ticking just cuz I think I'm the Shiz for having high Karma.
My point is, having a few K Karma doesn't necessarily mean I know my stuff. Lowering the Karma bar would in fact lower the quality of UA in the following ways:
1) Answers would be approved when incorrect.
2) Answers would be approved for the wrong reasons.
3) Answers would be approved that dodge around or hack the original question and do not strike to the root cause.
As a result many people would suffer as the in-depth knowledge and higher learning would be skirted around.
I'm a newbie here and these are my observations. That said, I'm happy to do my bit.
I know my place and my level. Many don't.
The problem is, that there is no way of indicating how advanced you are. I agree that lowering the karma bar was not the best idea, but it was under the hope that people with more karma would know their place. As you pointed out, many don't... (BTW the $$anonymous$$imum karma for accepting answers is 5k not 3k :P)

Aye, proves my point :D Anyway, someone said it was 3.5$$anonymous$$, so its been raised?
It would be good to have a quick indicator of Specialism.
For example we all know that Eric is a good programmer. His answers reflect this. I am good at game logics and implementation, and this comes out in my answers despite my inexperience, even though my coding is not the most advanced :P
$$anonymous$$nowing people's fortes would help a lot more than $$anonymous$$arma when it comes to choosing which answer to accept.
[I'd be tempted to challenge myself to get to 5k in 3 weeks, but I've got a game I need to get to production :P]
BUT, I've done it again. Sat up till 3am hitting UA ins$$anonymous$$d of working on my game :D ...or sleeping
Trying to weigh it all up. Learning $$anonymous$$odelling, U3D and 'Unityscript' and ai$$anonymous$$g to get my first game to Google Play by Sept/Oct. UA has become an essential part of my U3D process but I'm finding it hard to put it down and get back to the coding!
UA is deceptively time-consu$$anonymous$$g and fun, until you get frustrated XD
