Can I watch old HoloToolkit Tutorials and follow along with MRTK and Unity 2019?

I don't think I'm understanding the deal with Holotoolkit and Mixed Reality Toolkit. I know Holotoolkit isn't supported anymore with recent versions of Unity, but why can't I find any articles or documents talking about it? I can barely find any tutorials developing for HoloLens (1st gen) using MRTK. I thought they were completely different things. Are they the same thing?

Should I continue trying with MRTK and Unity 2019 or should I download holotoolkit and an older version of unity?
