The package is most likely corrupt, try re-downloading. Try importing another package or a package from the Standard Assets. Have you got enough disk space?

If all packages give the same error I'd suggest installing Unity. Also check permissions.

I had the same problem. I installed latest(3.5.6f4 version.) Did not help. Giving Unity, the ad$$anonymous$$istrator rights also did not help. I could import correctly by Assets->Import Package->Custom Package. I do not know if this solution works without the above modifications, I did just not try.

The problem IS the NAS! Copying the same package to a local drive en then importing goes fine.

I have the same problem: "Error while importing package: Couldn't decompress package".

My project is on a NAS server (QNAP) which doesn't use a Windows Filesystem. Unity apparantly has a problem with this. If I create a local project I have no problems. This is a bug!

Workaround is to create a local project, import package and manually copy the assets to to the NAS project.
