Question by Pior · Jun 19, 2013 at 05:05 PM · paymentmoneypercentage

Does Unity get a percentage every time I the developer makes a sale on the market?

In developing for any market; rather iphone, Android, Windows etc. By using Unity will I, the developer have to pay Unity a percentage of some sort - in what I sell on the gaming market?

If you sell more than $100k you need to buy a Pro license though.

Would someone like to comment on why a correct answer has been downvoted?

It is partially correct not all correct, but who ever did down mark it was a bit mean, I will thumbs it up to 0 again.

Thanks! As you can probably tell - I don't need the $$anonymous$$arma, but downvotes on this site are normally accompanied by a comment as to why.

"Will I pay unity a percentage of some sort" - "No you won't" is entirely correct. You have indeed added the percentages (not accurately from my understanding) of what Apple takes - it's 30%... But I didn't answer that way because it wasn't in the question. I qualified with my comment that you need to buy a Pro license if your revenue exceed $100k. So I'm failing to understand how my simple answer didn't completely fulfil the OP's request.

To my $$anonymous$$d you don't down vote an earlier, correct, complete answer because you are unhappy the OP hasn't accepted your answer. Please comment when you down vote, and it is site etiquette to downvote incorrect answers.

How is it unhelpful to say, very simply, no you don't pay a percentage and then, use a comment due to the fact that a Pro license is a fee and not a percentage, and so to my $$anonymous$$d should not be a part of the main body of the answer?

Unity does not charge on a per title basis and you do not pay royalties or pay revenue share, even for games and applications made with the free version.

However, the free version of Unity may not be licensed by a commercial entity with annual gross revenues (based on fiscal year) in excess of US$100,000, or by an educational, non-profit or government entity with an annual budget of over US$100,000.

Also, if you are selling on the iOS App Store you will have to pay a fee to Apple.

Here you go! As I do agree with some of the arguments sir whydoidoit put forward, I do appreciate the extra wording that helped me understand the matter a bit more :)

Apple charge 15 % I believe, unity do not unless you make 100 thousand dollars, that is also 80 thousand pounds and you have to have had free unity. Android is free; however if you have Unity Pro everything is free except that charge from Apple.inc - I think you must have pro already as you have the iOS build which requires a pro license.

You do not need Pro to develop for iOS.

So to recap, I don't pay Unity anything until I reach a turnover of $100,000 then I must purchase a Pro license.. I/We only pay the game/app sellers like, Apple etc. Got It...

BUT The question remains, how does Unity know if and when I reach over $100,000 turnover? Is it just honesty based?

I thought i answered this. i mean your question specific.?!? O$$anonymous$$ well On your Unity Developers account accessed through your service panel in Unity or here is a link that may or may not log you in automatically here, it keeps track of all of that for now. You have to login via your unity account and accept a policy that states you are in charge of anything to do with your game, But they will handle marketing and sales for you, and keep track of profits and or losses. I am also pretty sure it said in there that the total of both you loss' plus you're earning must overcome 100k USD before you are required a pro license on that account But Please, Do Not quote me on that! TOS - Read it yourself here. Hope this clears everything up for everyone :)

side-note

This does not stop you from making a new account now does it? and how would they really know? well they could proxy your ip if they became suspicious. but unlikely.

ps. Please, i don't upvote me for this, there is no need for that, this is all findable by you very easily. Just dig around a bit and you would be supersized what you learn.
