Question by Bryan3D · Aug 16, 2020 at 10:08 AM · legacyfilesize

Can the contents of the Library folders be deleted for file maintenance purposes?

My project's Library folder is huge (2.69 GB) and has the following folders:

Artifacts: 889 MB il2cpp_cache: 168 MB metadata: 1.1 GB

I think most of the files in these folders are left over from previous versions of the app. Can the contents of these folders be deleted to minimize the project size?

I was able to delete my entire "il2cpp_cache" folder (168 $$anonymous$$B) with no ill-effects. So far. Knock on wood :o)

But, bad things happened when I deleted my "Artifacts" folder (889 $$anonymous$$B) contents. These must be as critical as my "metadata" folder (1.1 GB) contents.

You should be able to delete the entire Library folder without any issues - other than, if you want to count that, having to wait for the library to be rebuilt.

Yes. The library contains the converted assets. For example, 3d models are stored in fbx format. If you put a Maya or Blender file in you Assets folder, Unity will have these programs convert them to fbx for further use. The result is stored in the Library folder. If you delete it, Unity will have to reimport all assets, which can take a while.

Side note: Since asset conversion can yield different results depending on your editor platform and build target, the Library folder is not to be shared with other members of your team. It should be ignored with any version control system.

  1. Make sure the files you are about to delete have not been extracted. To do this, refresh the content of the browser window and notice the icon in the Type column. For files to be deleted, they must be checked in to the library by the user who checked them out.

  2. Select each file you want to delete by hovering the cursor over the file and then selecting the mark.

  3. In the header, select Files> Delete Document. In the delete confirmation dialog box, click OK.

An alternative way to delete files and folders

  1. Open the document library that you want to delete files or folders.

  2. Select one or more files you want to delete by hovering over the file and then selecting the checkbox. If you delete only one file or folder, you can skip this step.

  3. Right-click on the icon of one of the files.

  4. In the delete confirmation dialog box, click OK.
