how to transfer a custom character and make it the player,how to transfer a custom character from scene to scene and make it playable?

I'm trying to create a character customization menu as part of a college project I have the customization menu near enough done the only problem i'm having is transferring the custom character to the game and making it the playable character. Does anyone know how i can do this or could point me in the direction of a tutorial that could help me resolve this? Thanks in advance
