Does Unity really makes 3D sound synthesis?
Hello,
I'd like to know if Unity can really makes 3D sound synthesis from a stereo sound. Inside the audio source component there is the 3D options which requires a 3D sound. Even if I put a normal stereo sound, it is recognize at 3D sound. But once I pass in game mode, the sound act more like a surround sound than like a 3D sound.
So, does Unity really makes 3D sound synthesis? Or it is just surround sound?
Thank you!
I'm far from an expert on sounds (so, not an answer) but here is a little project I did to play with the doppler effect. I'd say it demonstrate the 3D aspect, but I have no idea what is the difference surround and synthesis.

A 3d sound(or ingame object sound(like a radio)) can be represented by a stereo image. It is slightly complex for the average user, but a basic breakdown of the surround is:
A stereo image is 2D (left channel, right channel):
This can be split between the 5 speakers
LF (left front) represent half of the left channel (minus) low freq RF(right front) represent half of the right channel (minus) low freq
RL (Rear Left) represents other half of the left channel (minus) low freq RR (Rear Right)represents other half of the right channel (minus) low freq
Center (mix of both LF and RF)
(0.1) considered the sub or low frequency.
This is the basic breakdown of a 5.1 system from a stereo 2D image.
Now that it is a surround sound image you can move around it and it will act according to basic principals (think of a boom box on a table in a room, or tv for that matter), you can run outside the room and as you get further the sound dissipates. You can walk around it in a circle and hear the pan(panoramic view) change according to perspective. There is considerable fading and such that must occur, but minus the technicalities that is the basic idea behind it. Hope this helps some future sound enthusiasts.
