Question by flaviusxvii · May 16, 2011 at 07:26 PM · prefabcopy

Can you copy a Prefab?

I've made an explosion prefab that I'd like to copy for other explosion types but I don't see how you'd make a copy. Right clicking the prefab doesn't give any option to copy it and CTRL-C CTR-V don't do anything.

Is this a bizarre thing to want to do?

Just use duplicate. Note that this option does not appear on right-click in the Project window, but you can select the prefab and use the Edit menu or corresponding keyboard shortcuts.

You cannot duplicate inside the project window, only inside the hierarchy window. I assume with prefab he means the actual prefab, not an instance of it in his scene.

@Joshua: No, you can duplicate inside the project window just fine. I'm not talking about instances in scenes.

$$anonymous$$y Project window can't duplicate ... ?

Just checked, appears you are right and ctrl+d does duplicate inside the project window. I thought you couldn't because the right-click window does not mention it as an option where it does mention it in the hierarchy window. Also, I advised against messing with the file outside Unity, I think you misread. Anyways, I deleted my answer because it is indeed not useful since you can duplicate.

I just edited Eric5h5's answer to include a bit more info on how to access the duplicate functionality.

Do it the easy way, close unity and go to the project folder, copy and paste, start up unity, it will import it.

If you want to use the prefab in any other project you just Rightclick> export Package
