3ds '.max' file importing is not supported on OS X

Just tried porting a PC/Android Unity project to Unity on Mac - surprised that .max is not supported on OS X. What is a workaround for importing max files to Unity on Mac?

It's not surprising, considering that there is no OS X version of Max, and you need Max installed in order for Unity to use it to convert the files. Save in some other format like FBX that doesn't need external apps to do the conversion.

There is nothing stopping the guys behind Unity to make a standalone importer for .max files.

This limitation is making Unity useless in a situation where you have artists working on $$anonymous$$ax while you need to compile an iOS version of the Unity app on a $$anonymous$$ac.

I am surprised this is an issue too, as this workflow is common. Please fix.
