Focus F key not working?
So after seeing it explained in a few tutorials: I select object from hierarchy Click once in scene view Then press F.
Nothing happens though. I suspect the issue is more noobish than system based. The orientation tool in scene view is also a simple cube lacking the coloured cones for different view angles. I've a PC but have only followed mac based tutorials so far including one of Unitys own but that clarified where keys differ between PC and mac. Any ideas?

You select an object from the hierarchy, then move the mouse pointer over the scene view (don't click, that will deselect), and press F.
Thank you so much! I know its a simple fix but I didnt realize that I was doing that wrong. I was trying to press F when my mouse was in the hierarchy.
You're not "wrong", Unity just has an ancient UI with no focus on UX. It's important not to blame yourself at bad design, that way we can do better in the future.

You can also, after clicking on the GameObject in the hierarchy, click on the tab of the scene view to restore focus to that window, after which point the F hotkey should work.

Okay I decided to answer my question in case it helps solve the issue for other people. Apparently whatever I did to mess up the view selection and the focus function was corrected by starting a new project. However starting a new scene did not fix the issue. I assume starting a new project wont work for a lot of people if this happens in the actual project they are working in and not just testing Unity3D with. However I hope with the screen capture above and the description somebody will spot a very obvious mistake I made and be able to help other new users correct it if they encounter it. Thanks for the effort anyway folks.

This is an old question, but I will answer for the record, I had the same problem where in my case focus worked with "K" instead of "F", if this was your case, then it's mostly because of multi-language keyboard, try pressing Left Alt+Shift (or what ever to change language to english) right after starting Unity and then it should be ok for the rest of the session, this worked for me.
