Question by iamlowlikeyou · May 07, 2018 at 12:22 PM · 2dspriteblur

Is there a way to blur single sprites in Unity?

I am working on a 2D game, where I have the backgrounds composed of several layers of sprites (to create parallax scrolling etc.). I want some of the layers to be blurred to create an illusion of depth, and currently I'm doing this simply by blurring the sprites before I import them into Unity.

However, this gets pretty tiresome, as I ongoingly make adjustments to the graphics, and thus have to import the same sprites over and over, so it would be nice if there was a way to apply blur to single sprites (or layers in the sprite stack) inside Unity.

I guess one way could be to arrange my scenes in 3D space and then use the Post Processing Stack Depth of field effect, but for several reasons I'd like to avoid working in 3D space.

Is there a way to apply blur effects to single sprites in 2D inside Unity? I'm open for 3rd party packages.

Since there is not so much info on this topic we did an article on how we achieved it, it's pretty detailed and you can see all of your options: https://80.lv/articles/depth-of-field-in-unity-for-2d-games-with-semi-transparent-sprites/

You should use google before posting a question. I have found this in 3 seconds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKTjVACAfqE

But won't this one blur everything that's underneath it?

I'm looking for something where I can blur the different layers of sprites (or each sprite individually) to different degrees. Sorry if I was not clear about that.

You should be less toxic about it.

Horrible answer. Didn't even answer the question, and was toxic while doing it. The most unhelpful of all unhelpful answers

I used to have this problem, I used shaders to blur sprites.
