Union License Question

Hi,

I'm new to Unity, so this might seem like a silly question. Do you know if union sells games on all platforms, considering the mobile and console fees are (for an independant dev like me) quite pricy.

Thank You

From what I understand, you need a fairly well established game in order to use Union. It's not a way to get around buying an iOS or Android license, if that's what you're asking, it's a way to get games on additional platforms that us mere mortals don't have direct access to. For most independent devs, $400 for a mobile license shouldn't be a problem; it's certainly far less than the cost of console licenses. If by "independent dev" you actually mean "broke student" or something similar, that's probably another matter. ;)

Union is limited by where they've ported the Unity engine... For mobile, so far, it's BB Playbook and Nokia non-Windows phones... Unity has issues with WP7 for some reason.

It's not "for some reason", it's because WP7 doesn't allow native code. (They did port Unity to Flash, which shows a port to non-native code is technically possible, but it clearly wasn't trivial, and you wouldn't want that on mobile anyway since there are performance issues.)

In response to Eric5h5's first comment, I don't mean "Broke Student", I mean "Independent dev who likes to save when possible"

It would be unreasonable to develop on all platforms (even excluding the ones that can be developed through the normal Unity process) (by 'all platforms' I mean EVERY platform that is used in decent amount today).

According to this blog post, Union supports the BlackBerry PlayBook, Roku, and Nokia MeeGo N9 platforms. Of course, this could just be referring to the platforms that are not otherwise available through Unity normally, as the FAQ for Union does mention Android and iOS.

As Unity does keep 20% of the money gained from Union, it is probable that they will work on getting your game on mobile and possible consoles. Of course, you could always ask them through email yourself.
