Unity editor not responding very often

I just started using unity editor, I'm on a fresh project with nothing but a square sprite, but at least once every five minutes unity stops responding and I have to force quit the program.

I'm on a MacBook Air 2020 ver. 11.0.1 using unity ver. 2021.2.1f1

is there something I can do to fix this?
