cannot get snap to grid to activate

I cannot get any item when I create a new 2d project to snap to grid. I made a new 2d sprint, I made a canvas and any child (image, text etc) of the canvas when I click to move it will drag around but wont snap. When i focus on any UI element that is a child of the canvas the canvas diasppears from view, so I cannot size to the canvas, snap to either edge, the lines that help with aligning the image or texts, none of that works. My grid snap button is greyed out, and I cannot get the button to ungrey and become clickable even if I se the tool handle rotation to global?

please help

Ive restarted the computer and it did not help.
