Why are my planes disappearing?

Hiya, I am very much a beginner with Unity so please be gentle!

When I create a plane and assign it to an object, some time later I notice that the plane has gone?!? This has happened a few times and I am entirely sure I haven't removed it myself.

If you have any plane controlling code then feel free to post it!
Is it still in the Hierarchy panel? If so then it might just be a heckin long way away.
Check all places you call Destroy() in case you're mixing up gameobjects or destroying a parent of the plane.
