3ds Max What Export/Import Settings for .fbx?

Hey!

I am trying to import the default Asset ThirdPersonCharacter Models Ethan.fbx into 3ds Max and then exporting it into as .fbx file. (just to understand what settings are needed)

Then I want to import this .fbx into Unity 3d 5.1.1 and add one of the default animation.

Surprise, surprise, it doesnt work at all. i tried literally almost anything, all kind of setting. Yes, I read all stuff about right settings export in the unity docu. it didnt help

I tried it both with 3ds Max 2012 and 2016.

I get this error see the attachment, when I try to reimport the the exported .fbx file again into 3ds Max (just to see, if everything was exported correctly). Although there is such an error I can still use all bones to animate the figure. If I export it some other ways without that error, the skin is gone.

If I use this exported 'corrupted' .fbx file for the default Animation in unity are heavily deformed

Seriously, I dont know what I could have done wrong.

I'd appreciate any piece of advice.

Yes, I also downlaoded the .fbx Plugin for 3ds max 2012 that gives you few more export options. but didnt help

As a quick test - I had no trouble importing the Ethan Asset (from recent asset store package) into 3DS Max 2015 (no errors) nor when further re-exporting out of max to FBX: http://grab.by/IFbS

  • Make sure you have the most recent Ethan asset

  • If you have errors with Max 2016 - make sure you try the 2014 version of the FBX import/export (advanced options in the diagogue)

It's still not clear why you want/need to import and re-export ethan, you can simply apply any animations to him with Mecanim retargeting in Unity. If you are simply looking to learn which settings to use for your own character then here are a few resources:
