Question by Dudledok · Jun 23, 2015 at 03:47 PM · lightinggraphicsglowbloom

How to make a glowing line renderer?

I am using a line renderer for a sort of HUD / GUI element and want to make it have a glowing appearance, sort of neon or like a hologrid etc.

The glow isn't to be applied to other objects because there are no other objects nearby it'd apply to, just want them to glow. I understand emission is part of Unity's GI and therefore it doesn't seem the right sort of thing for this (and in practice has seemingly no effect).

Is the best option to create a material using a texture with transparency? What alternatives are there? Thank you in advance.

Couldn't you create teh glow as part of the texture? A solid red (or whatever) core, and then it starts fading outwards.

@Cherno - Yeah that was the suggestion I am making with the material to simulate it. Wondering if that's how people always do it or if there are alternatives.

Well, there is that thing called "Bloom", but it's bound to lighting as far as I know. Hoewever, you could still try it; there should be an Image Effect by that name in the Standard Assets package. $$anonymous$$aybe there is a dedicated Glow effect as well.

@Cherno - ImageEffects are applied to the camera and therefore effect the entire scene. I suppose as it's part of the GUI I can use a second camera and try that, but typically that wouldn't be an option.

Well, I had the per-camera-effect in the back in my $$anonymous$$d too, but I figured it might be a good start for research. Also, it's possible to use multiple cameras with different effects on each which only render certain objects. Not really recommended in this case, but certainly possible. Thanks for the re$$anonymous$$der, though :)
