Ambient Skybox doesn't work on opaque unless baked?

I'm using default unity skybox for a day/night cycle - it's working well for the reflection in my water4simple setup as it plugs in directly, but having my ambientmode set to skybox doesn't seem to have any effect on opaque standard shaded geometry - it's just black as if there's no ambient. Flat color and Tricolor work of course. Checking continual-light-bake will work for whatever the last skybox time of day is before playing (along with irradiance), but once in playmode and the day/night cycle changes it, it doesn't update the ambient light.
Could I be doing something wrong here or is the skybox not intended to be real-time ambient lighting? Are there any plugins or work-arounds to get it to do so?
